The Society’s History
The history of UNA activities go back to 2003 when our university sent a delegation of 8 students to the prestigious WorldMUN conference in Heidelberg, Germany. At this time there was no MUN or UNA society, so the event was simply a one-off.
In 2006 plans were made for a Model UN society and a small group was formed.
In 2009, UNA really began! Between 2009 and 2010, the UNYSA (United Nations Youth & Student Association) group steadily grew into a moderately sized yet active group under the leadership of Ghassan Haddad and Frances Quarcoopome. During this time the society began attending the annual LIMUN conference and started holding more regular meetings.
In 2011 Laura Wijaya took over as president and the society grew further with conferences in London and Birmingham attended by the group.
In 2012, Brendan De Souza took over as president and the society was renamed UNA-UOS. During the 2012-13 academic year the society quadrupled in size and the conference schedule increased to almost 20, with the over half a dozen in Europe and also the first trip to North America. Furthermore, during this year the first ever SheffMUN conference was held, an event thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved, as well as the first “UNA-UOS Symposium”, which was attended by over ten universities and institutions.
Codrina Cretu was president for the 2013-2014 academic year. This year featured a programme of weekly workshops, eight conferences in the UK and Europe, four non-MUN trips and the second edition of SheffMUN. SheffMUN 2013 saw participants from more than 60 universities and 40 countries as well as receiving patronage from the European Parliament, Prime Minister of the UK and Foreign & Commonwealth Office. The event was enjoyed by all participants.
At the academic year 2015/16, Evelyn Doyle took over as president and the society was renamed to “University of Sheffield – Model United Nations Society”.
Since the society began in 2009 it has benefited from a very diverse, committed and talented membership base. We owe our success to the huge number of students who have shown huge commitment to the society and have also started winning numerous awards in the past years.
